Goodbye just doesn’t say it anymore…

Lord, may I learn to teach my kids your ways,,,

I am reading the letters from the Apostle John to the Churches in the Book of Revelation and it is amazing what is hidden just in the beginning of the beginning of the beginning.  Like a scratch on a scratch of God’s revelation.

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven-fold  Spirit before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. [Revelation 1:5-6]

I was reading David Pawson’s book on the same and he discussed greetings in ancient letters.  He stated if you were Hebrew your letters started with “Peace be to you, your neighbors, enemies and God” and if you were Greek your letters started with “grace” which he said literally meant good luck.   And so he said a Christian would start his letters with “Grace and peace to you”

He said also that “goodbye” is short for God be with ye (you).  I had never heard that so I looked it up in the etymology section of english.stackexchange and it said.

From the Old English Dictionary – “A contraction of the phrase God be with you (or ye)”  The substitution of good- for God may have been due to association with such formulas of leave-taking as good day, good night, etc.

In a quote from 1659, we still have “God”: “But mum for that, his strength will scarce supply His Back to the Balcona, so God b’ wy.”

And they said by 1694, we have transitioned to “good“.  Like so many things in our culture, if we are not taught by our forefathers the richness of the language and what is important to us, over time, it gets watered down and God slowly disappears from our walk.  However, I will say that “good” is of God as the bible states all that is good is of God and all that is evil is from the Evil One.

So this is what I am discovering about the Bible in this season is that even a few words of the beginning of a beginning of a beginning to a book are really important and have rich meaning and history.  You could spend a lifetime on any verse if you wanted to just keep meditating on it.

David Pawson said , The world cannot find peace; they are desperate for it, but they cannot have it because the world does not know the God who always is; the world does not know the seven-fold Spirit of God, and does not trust in Jesus, this reliable reigning Saviour”

Lord,

I pray that I will be a good (God like) father to my children and those around me Lord.  I pray that I will raise them up to learn to follow You and lean on you for everything good in their life.   And Lord let me live by the 7 fold Spirit and believe and trust in Yeshua (Jesus).   And Lord when I leave this world and I say Goodbye to those I leave behind, that in my heart know that I am really saying “God be with ye” to my family & friends, so that YOU may be with them
for eternity in His presence.    Love, your servant Steven
